A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's flagship government projects.
The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine what caused this incident,” stated the head of state.
The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose time in office concluded the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The development of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a significant growth of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked persistent concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an prior collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an prompt pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This halt was requested pending a full technical review. The party declared that the situation "calls for swift accountability."
In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in total adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and running of these national undertakings.
